Carla’s head snaps from her newspaper as a hand touches her.  No, it grabs her.  Right there on the train, someone is grabbing her ass.  Carla stares straight ahead wide eyed, her mouth opening and closing yet nothing coming out. On a packed commuter train in New York, someone is feeling her butt.  This isn’t a tentative brush either, this is a full palm grip as if her bottom is a basketball. Carla wonders what she should do.  She’s holding on to the bar for stability with the same hand that held her briefcase, and her other hand held a newspaper and her coffee.  She stands frozen with uncertainty.  She shakes her butt sharply to let her assailant know his touch is unwelcome, but the train’s lurching may obscure her intent.

Has he interpreted it as a welcoming wiggle?

Carla almost laughs at her procrastination.  Had this been a club where her hands were free, she would have aggressively spun and confronted him.  However, standing here with her hands occupied, she didn’t really have a choice.  Besides, her lack of immediate action would make anything she does now seem hypocritical.  Around her others occupy their own little worlds, businessmen, a family of tourists, and regular men and women.  Carla turns her head to the right to identify the culprit.  The nearest man seems engrossed in his newspaper, the New York Times. There’s someone behind her, she can’t see, though.  The hand suddenly moves confidently to her other cheek, and why not?  She has done nothing to discourage its assault.

A male voice suddenly said, “Interesting story about Trump Tower, don’t you think?”

Carla swung her head to the left to come face to face with her assailant.  His groping continues unabated.

“Excuse me?”

“The Trump story,” the man repeated, motioning with his chin to her paper.

“Um, yeah,” she stutters with an instinctive smile, stunned at his brashness.

Not only is he feeling up a stranger in a crowded subway car, he’s also talking to her.  She wonders how many other social conventions he’s going to violate.

At least he smells nice.

“I’m particularly amused at the allegations Trump knowingly cut corners,” he said.

“I haven’t read it yet.”

Carla wonders why she politely smiles at him when she should tell him off.  Instead, she just nods.

“You have to admire Trump, he has the balls to do things no one else would dare.”

Like you, no doubt, she thought.

Carla notes his left hand is gripping the overhead bar.  Is she being felt-up by a left hand or a right hand?  She focuses on her butt and tries to make out the thumb.  Definitely a right hand. She did the mental gymnastics in her head and determines the man behind her can also be the one groping her.  Glancing further to the left, she can see another man with his right shoulder angles to her.

Can he be the one, she wondered?

She really didn’t want to make a scene, and didn’t want to accuse an innocent man of harassing her.  The train pulls into the next station, and even more people board as the hand continues to make a home for itself on her derriere.  She tries a sharp shake again, but this one coincides with the train beginning to move and everyone shifting.

“So you’re here for the ‘World Business Forum’,” he said with a slight smile.

“Yeah, just flew in last night,” she replies, trying to look casual as she took a sip from her coffee.  “How did you guess?”

“A lucky guess?”

“Clever,” Carla said with a grin, quietly amused she has to resign herself to allow him, or whomever her attacker is, to casually caress her bottom for two more stops.

“Are you here alone?”

Carla seizes the opportunity.  “No, I’m here with my boss,” she replies, motioning behind her.
